KEIGHLEY MP John Grogan is backing a campaign calling on the Government to maintain animal welfare standards post-Brexit. He attended an event in Parliament in support of the #BetterDealForAnimals initiative. Behind the venture is the charity World Animal Protection, which is demanding that any future legislation or Government policy fully takes into account the impact on animal welfare. Mr Grogan said: “I am proud of the UK’s record on animal welfare. We are one of the world leaders on this issue and long may it continue.
“In December, 2017, the Government announced that it would be ‘introducing legislation to recognise that animals can feel pain and introduce tougher sentencing for animal cruelty offences’.
“It is vital that this legislation is brought to Parliament as soon as possible.”
He added that were several specific animal welfare issues currently being raised in Parliament that also featured regularly in his constituency postbag. These included testing on animals, and racehorse and greyhound welfare.
